This time last year, when we said we were looking forward to an exciting 2017, even we were not expecting to have quite so many great things to celebrate in the business!
We started the year by welcoming Samantha Read to the newly created position of Group HR Manager and over the past 12 months she has proved to be an invaluable part of our management team.
In the second quarter of the year our group raised awareness and money for a variety of charitable causes including donating to the Papworth Trust in Cambridge, staff from Norwich taking part in the Cycle 100 and the announcement of Blood Bikes as our Charity of the Year. Our wonderful staff donated time and food to local foodbanks, also.
Summer for the group was a hive of activity, with KTIB winning the Adnams 'Integrity In All We Do Award', and the purchase of Gibbs Denley Insurance Services Ltd based in Swavesey and Bury St Edmunds. July also saw the launch of One Guarantee, an insurance scheme offering a range of products for the Structural Warranty market.
Through Autumn we attended numerous events such as StudyWorld, the Cambridge Dragon Boat Festival and the Emergency Services Show. We also found time to organise a well-attended golf day at Barnham Broom in Norfolk for staff and clients.
Our staff were being recognised as well- Rory McPhail became a Director in the Cambridge office NWBIB and we recruited four graduates onto our staff. In addition, we entered three members of the group from three separate companies into Insurance Age’s Broker Apprentice. With all this recruitment it became clear we needed to grow our HR resource and Chloe Miller joined Samantha in our HR department. In preparation for the impending brand migration to One Broker we redecorated our Norwich office and expanded our floor space.
As we head towards the end of the year, our pace hasn’t slackened. We are proud that two of our staff were entered into the Cambridge CII’s Young Achiever of the Year Award. The staff at Gibbs Denley have presented awards at the British Youth Travel Award, while our We Love Lettings team have been visiting each of our Managing Agents. We have continued our charity work as well, with staff across the group planking for Pudsey, donating for the second time in the year to local foodbanks as well as packing items in both Norwich and Cambridge to help those in dire need.
In November Insurance Age published a list of the Top 100 Independent Insurance Brokers and we were delighted to reach the 37th position. What a wonderful way to end such an amazing year for the group and entirely down to our wonderful staff, clients and suppliers.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. I have a feeling that 2018 will be equally if not more exciting, with the forthcoming launch of a host of new initiatives!

One of the key advantages of using the One Broker Group for your insurance needs is the inhouse claims team available to clients. Our friendly, dedicated staff are on hand to assist at every stage of making a claim and are here to help.
Today we speak to Gary, a Senior Claims Technician at the One Broker Group’s office in Cambridge, NWBIB. With over a decade of experience in the insurance industry, and having handled claims for a myriad of leading companies before joining NWBIB, Gary sure knows his stuff.
Gary, what do you enjoy about working in our Claims Team?
The great thing about my job is the variety it brings. All the different claim types we receive daily mean that no two days are the same and there is always a new type of claim or circumstance that you haven’t dealt with before just around the corner to keep you on your toes.
How many claims come through the team each week?
It really varies but on average we receive 20 new claims a week. With the policies we deal with this could mean claims occurring ranging from liability to motor, musician to cyber risks.
What’s the most memorable claim you have handled?
When I first started, I handled a claim from a customer telling me they had honey leaking through their ceiling which was coming from a bee’s nest within the loft space. To this day I wished I had suggested to them to get some jars and collect the honey!
What’s the key tip you would give clients to reduce their need to claim?
I look after a lot of the WeLoveLettings claims so I would recommend clients to keep their properties well maintained and if they discover an issue, like a roof tile that is dislodged, gutters with moss in them or the sealant around the shower tray looking worn, don’t put these jobs off, and have the necessary repairs carried out sooner rather than later.

With winter fast approaching, and people rushing to get their flu jabs, as a business it is important to remember viruses can come in forms other than merely biological. Bug, virus, parasite, whatever you want to call it, cybercrime can be a huge risk to any business.
This question of how to protect your company from unexpected events, was answered on Wednesday as businesses from around Norfolk listened to speakers from KTIB - a trading style of Knowlden Titlow Insurance Brokers, Smith & Pinching and Clapham & Collinge, who organised the event.
The lunch briefing explored the topic of 'the risks that could kill your business', covering subjects from shareholder and partnership protection, succession and cyber business continuity risks. Ian Limeburner, from KTIB, presented his expertise on cyber risks and explained how insurance protection offers a cure to the threat.
Speaking of the event, Ian said "It is great to take part in a seminar that is designed to raise awareness on some really key issues for any business. The world of cyber- crime is very topical at the moment but I have seen a general lack of awareness of the far reaching exposures some businesses face. Our aim is to help companies make an informed choice on their options and protect themselves in the best way".

On Sunday the 4th of June, One Broker’s very own Famous 5 cycled the Norwich 50/100, raising money for the British Heart Foundation, the event organiser’s selected charity.
Setting off from The Forum, they headed off in the direction of Holkham Hall, taking in the dazzling North Norfolk coastline including Walcott, Mundesley and Sheringham before circling back through picturesque landscapes to Aylsham. Crossing the finish line in the early afternoon at Norwich’s Bishopsgate, the cyclists looked understandably weary following their 7 hour ride but appeared to have enjoyed their day.
Henry Plaster, Trainee Broking Technician who is currently working on a new scheme for the One Broker group, One Guarantee, said "At times it was tough going but we have had a brilliant day. Cycling in our One Broker jerseys while raising money for the British Heart Foundation has been really gratifying but I must say that when I go back to work tomorrow, I’ll be avoiding the stairs!".

On 27 February, the Lord Chancellor confirmed that the Discount Rate, a key component of this calculation concerning future costs, is to be reduced from the current level of 2.5% to -0.75%. The change takes effect from 20 March 2017 and will have a significant impact on the cost of the most serious injury claims. A leading Insurance Company has predicted the overall cost to the industry on all impacted claims outstanding at 20 March is to be £7bn, with a further additional annual cost of around £1.2bn thereafter.
The change will impact the cost of insurance for products which cover injury claims, mainly Commercial Motor, Employers’, Public and Products Liability insurance. The precise impact will vary depending on a range of factors. But we expect most insurers and particularly those with a large motor based book to increase prices to help cover the cost of these changes. As yet we are uncertain by how much, but increases are expected.
Insurers are engaging with Government to make sure they understand the effect this decision will have on millions of people. Following a meeting between the Chancellor and industry leaders, we welcome their commitment to review the process.
Insurers will continue to make their voice heard to ensure that in the future, personal injury discount rates are set at a level that is fair to both the injured and businesses.
Rest assured we will be ensuring any effect of this proposed change will be minimised as much as possible and we will strive to ensure that clients premiums remain competitive. We will discuss these changes when we see you next, but if you wanted to get clarification now please contact your Account Executive.
