Fun, Sun and over £300 raised for SERV Norfolk - a great day for One Broker at Run Norwich

Ashley Jones and Emily Bridges

On Sunday the 6th of August, 2 of One Broker’s own completed 10k at Run Norwich. In aid of our Charity of the Year, Blood Bikes, the duo raised over £300 for the organisation, with donations still being collected.

The race kicked off at Gentleman’s Walk in Norwich’s city centre, metres from the finish line outside City Hall. A stretch of 10 kilometres, encompassing Carrow Road, Rose Lane and the beautiful Cathedral grounds, was covered by the runners.

Proudly wearing their red Blood Bikes running vests, Ashley Jones and Emily Bridges both beat their target race times, collectively raising £320 (and counting) for Blood Bikes. The organisation is a non-government funded charity which completes an essential role in delivering blood products and donated breast milk to NHS services outside of working hours.

Group Financial Controller Ashley Jones, who finished the race in an impressive 53 minutes, said "I had a lot of fun running round the course, helped along by the shouts of support from the crowd and fellow Blood Bike runners. The free Adnams beer at the end of the race was also a very good incentive to keep me going!".

Cyclists from the One Broker Group complete 100 miles for Norwich Charity Bike Ride

Danny Hawkins, Hugo Plaster, Henry Plaster, Andy Wilson and Ian Limeburner

On Sunday the 4th of June, One Broker’s very own Famous 5 cycled the Norwich 50/100, raising money for the British Heart Foundation, the event organiser’s selected charity.

Setting off from The Forum, they headed off in the direction of Holkham Hall, taking in the dazzling North Norfolk coastline including Walcott, Mundesley and Sheringham before circling back through picturesque landscapes to Aylsham. Crossing the finish line in the early afternoon at Norwich’s Bishopsgate, the cyclists looked understandably weary following their 7 hour ride but appeared to have enjoyed their day.

Henry Plaster, Trainee Broking Technician who is currently working on a new scheme for the One Broker group, One Guarantee, said "At times it was tough going but we have had a brilliant day. Cycling in our One Broker jerseys while raising money for the British Heart Foundation has been really gratifying but I must say that when I go back to work tomorrow, I’ll be avoiding the stairs!".

Ogden Discount Rate and Effect on the Insurance Market

You will now be aware that the Government has taken the decision to change the way in which the cost of serious injury claims is calculated.

On 27 February, the Lord Chancellor confirmed that the Discount Rate, a key component of this calculation concerning future costs, is to be reduced from the current level of 2.5% to -0.75%. The change takes effect from 20 March 2017 and will have a significant impact on the cost of the most serious injury claims. A leading Insurance Company has predicted the overall cost to the industry on all impacted claims outstanding at 20 March is to be £7bn, with a further additional annual cost of around £1.2bn thereafter.

What does the reform mean?

The change will impact the cost of insurance for products which cover injury claims, mainly Commercial Motor, Employers’, Public and Products Liability insurance. The precise impact will vary depending on a range of factors. But we expect most insurers and particularly those with a large motor based book to increase prices to help cover the cost of these changes. As yet we are uncertain by how much, but increases are expected.

What happens next?

Insurers are engaging with Government to make sure they understand the effect this decision will have on millions of people. Following a meeting between the Chancellor and industry leaders, we welcome their commitment to review the process.

Insurers will continue to make their voice heard to ensure that in the future, personal injury discount rates are set at a level that is fair to both the injured and businesses.

What will we be doing

Rest assured we will be ensuring any effect of this proposed change will be minimised as much as possible and we will strive to ensure that clients premiums remain competitive. We will discuss these changes when we see you next, but if you wanted to get clarification now please contact your Account Executive.
